◆Research Outline
Yano Research Institute has conducted a study on the global drone/UAV/UAS market with the following conditions:
  1. Research period: January to June, 2016
  2. Research target: Manufacturers of drones/UAV/UAS, user companies of drones/UAV/UAS services, companies making applications, etc.
  3. Research methodologies: Face-to-face interviews by the specialized researchers and literature search
What is a Drone/UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles)/UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems)?
In this research, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, or as an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), or as a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS), is defined as a miniaturized radio control airplane or a multicopter with some level of autonomous-control available. Therefore, so-called radio-controlled airplanes that fully rely on human remote control are excluded.
Development of attitude stabilization technologies using motion sensors and of flight-path cruising ability by using satellite positioning systems have made drones/UAV/UAS needless to rely on operating techniques of a human, which can lead to more opportunities and possibilities of extensive commercial use in various industries.

◆Key Findings
■Global Drone (UAV/UAS) Market in 2015 Expected to Achieve 1,241.0 Billion Yen,  CAGR from 2015 to 2020 to be 12.9%
The global market size of drones/UAV/UAS calculated by totaling all the drones from combat to civilian drones, from their operation to be commercial/service to recreational purposes and for hobby, achieved 1,241 billion yen in 2015. With the CAGR (Compound Average Growth Rate) of the global drone/UAV/UAS market from 2015 to 2020 being estimated to reach 12.9%, the global market size is likely to achieve 2,281.4 billion yen by 2020. Whereas the current number of combat drones occupies majority of entire drone/UAV/UAS, the ratio of number of combat and civilian drones is expected to be almost the same by 2020.

■Promising Market Awaits for Examination/Inspection Sector in Civilian Drone Services
The global market of civilian drones/UAV/UAS services attained 29.0 billion yen in 2015. With the CAGR from 2015 to 2020 projected to reach 50.4%, the market size is expected to reach 223.3 billion yen by 2020.  Among various purposes of drones, most promising and expansion-expected sectors are examination, inspection and measurement. The current drones/UAV/UAS delivering images and movies through the embedded cameras are already useful in various ways, but further advancement of the peripheral technologies is sure to lead to vaster ranges of possibilities in how they are used.
